Chapter 15

Bradley rushed into Leo's chamber, his usual swagger crushed under the weight of what he’d seen. "Boss. Master Mossweaver," he began, his voice stripped of its usual edge, his face grim and tight. "The forest on the eastern border is properly fucked up. It’s like… it’s alive. And not in a way any forest has a right to be."

Leo’s gaze sharpened, but he held silent, waiting. Bradley’s hesitation was new, and that alone meant something bad.

Bradley shifted his stance, as if steadying himself. “I sent a few scouts, right? Figured they’d get a read on whatever was making the wildlife act off. One of them’s a druid, knows the land better than any of us. And he says the place isn’t just infected. It’s been veil-tainted.”

Leo narrowed his eyes, the words falling heavy between them. “That’s impossible. I closed the breach in the veil.”

Bradley shrugged, swallowing before he continued. “Might as be, boss. But that’s what I was told. There’s this mist—thick as smoke, twice as dark. Not your usual fog. It clings to the trees like it’s alive. Almost moves with you. It’s so thick the guys couldn’t see their own hands. Turns the place into this twisted maze that shouldn’t make sense. And that’s just the start.”

Leo’s fists clenched, but he kept his voice steady. “Go on.”

Bradley glanced down, almost as if bracing for the memory. “It’s not just fog, Boss. Whatever’s in there is warping things. The druid says the animals and trees… they’re all different now. Bigger, like they’ve been feeding on something foul. Meaner, too. They don’t act right. Sergei barely got back with his life after one of those wolfy-snaky-blobby thing came at him. They’ve got this look in their eyes, like they’re watching. Hunting. It’s not natural.”

Leo took in the report, his gaze cold, considering. Bradley wasn’t one to let nerves cloud his judgment, which meant whatever was out there was worse than usual. “Alright, let’s see what we’re up against.” He turned to the gnarled figure waiting in the corner, beckoning him forward. “Mossweaver,” he called, “tell me how the Veil’s poison seeped this deep. I thought we had it closed off.”

Mossweaver, the ancient ent who’d pledged himself to Leo’s kingdom, moved with a creak of bark and roots, his heavy branches seeming to lean in, as if sharing a secret. “The Veil’s malice is patient,” Mossweaver said, his voice a low, rumbling hum that felt as old as the forest itself. “It doesn’t need time, only opportunity. Even the briefest glimpse into our world gives it power. When it touched the soil, even for that short time, it left its mark, a stain it won’t let go easily.”

Leo felt the weight of that explanation settle over him like iron. The Veil hadn’t just touched his land—it had poisoned it, seeding darkness in every shadowed corner of that forest. And now that taint had taken root, turning the forest itself into a predator.

“So, what’s it doing?” Leo asked, eyes fixed on Mossweaver.
